The Conventions are the same as any other typical breakfast show.
The structure of the show is basically how
it starts at 6 and finishes at 10.
The chart music is played and you are introduced
by the presenter. Then the adverts
begin, more music is played and more local sponsers which are owned by
Bauer. The show is financially successful
they hold lots of competitions and local events. The news cast plays ever half an hour which splits up the show, also adverts play which advertise or lead awareness for personal safety, such as adverts from THINK!
Popular music like chart music is played which relates to the demographic. Chart music artists such as Robin Thicke are played on the show, but there are still older songs played to, such as on the none stop school years programme.
The form of the show is audio broadcasting through digital and analogue signals.
The production process of Hallam FM includes information about products and trends which are being sold to the public, there will have been staff who wrote a plan of what will happen that day with talk hosts. News teams will have been organised and told about stories that target the audience at that time of year. Gossip would be involved about things in which the target audience would be interested in. There will also be staff who control a social networking websites such as twitter so they can reach the audience and let them know whats coming up on the show.
There are 3 presenters of Big John At
Breakfast, Clearly Big john is the main presenter. His dialect stays clear and
his emotions stay permanently happy and alive through out.
Producer James and Janine Jones are the
other two presenters who feature, as a presenter dialect should always be clear
so the audience remains engaged to the show and clearly understand what is
being said.
All accents are Yorkshire accents as all
presenters are from Yorkshire.
Jingles on Hallam FM, ‘Big John At Breakfast’ and ‘Hallam FM’ these are the openings of the show.
‘News’ this jingle keeps them up to date
with where about they are, so they know what they are listening to.
‘this is Hallam Fm.’ When people have only just turned into the
radio they will immediately know the radio station they are listening to when
they hear this.
‘Playing none stop school years.’ This jingle is to be aware that the school
year classics are being played which keeps listeners from that era to stay
engaged to the show.
There are different types of jingles, a lot
of jingles connote happiness and joy, this is also a way of advertising.
The denotation of the jingle ‘Big John At
Breakfast on Hallam FM.’ Connotes that
the show is trying to promote a radio station.
(different Hallam FM jingles are played.)
Many adverts which play on the show such as
financial, health, food, social, travel, toys, shopping centers, high street
stores, furniture, phones, sky and boilers etc. It uses AIDA marketing, this
way they get more listeners.
AIDA connotes Attention, Interest, Desire
and action, this encourages the audience and makes them want to take action and
satisfy their needs.
Music, which plays on the radio show, is
usually music from the charts and artists from Sheffield, Indie, Pop, Rock and
RnB. This is the music that most of the population of Sheffield listens to. So
by having this music played it attracts more people so the amount of listeners
of the show is raised.
Vox pops are the interviews which are
played through out Hallam FM. Examples of Vox Pops on Big john At breakfast
are, call about traffic news, police woman talking on the news, these types of
interviews interest listeners and keep them keen to hear what’s next.
Discussion Topics are a very important
thing on a radio show, Big John has things such as music, artists, celebrities,
sport, travel, news these are the topics that people are interested in, so it
keeps the listeners keen and want to listen to more. The discussion topics on
Big John At Breakfast engage the audience so they get to join in, a topic is
picked, and then they call in and then they talk about it.
Sound effects are usually used often in a
radio show, although as I was listening to a snippet of the show, I didn’t hear
many, but I did hear a drumroll which connotes introducing something (drumroll
sound.)
There are many competitors and sponsor
companies on Big John At Breakfast, such as Capital FM, Real radio, Peak FM,
BBC radio. I think Hallam aim was to get more listeners than the other radio
shows. I think this makes the show seem a lot more competitive. Other local sponsors
of the station are Sheffield Wednesday
grounds and Sheffield United grounds.
